When couples book a wedding photographer, they expect beautiful photos. And of course, that’s the goal. But what many people don’t realize is how much more a seasoned wedding photographer actually does on the wedding day. After nearly two decades of photographing weddings, I can confidently say this. I have fluffed dresses, calmed nerves, sewn buttons, managed timelines, and helped save the day more times than I can count.
Wedding photography is about much more than clicking a shutter. It’s about showing up with experience, heart, and the ability to keep everything moving when the unexpected happens. And trust me, one thing you can expect on a wedding day, is that something unexpected is going to happen. But it's never the end of the world and I'm the type of person that accepts it for what it is, keeps you calm and stays focus on what will be. Which is a beautiful wedding gallery after it is all said and done.
Helping the day flow smoothly is my goal. Your photographer is often one of the only vendors who is with you from the beginning of the day until the very end or at least the majority of it. That means we have a front-row seat to everything. From your hair and makeup prep to the dance floor, we’re watching the timeline and keeping things on track. If something runs behind, we adjust. If hair and makeup take longer than expected, we make quick decisions on how to make up for lost time. We do all of this while still capturing every important moment. Most couples don’t notice how many micro-adjustments we make throughout the day, but these little shifts are what allow everything to keep flowing calmly and on schedule.
The “Other” Hats We Wear
A few of the unexpected roles I’ve taken on during weddings over the years:
Boutonniere pinning when no one knows how to do it.
I can't tell you how many times I have shot a mom pinning the boutonniere on her son or bridesmaids pinning the groomsmen and then setting my camera down so that I can for real pin everyone's boutonniere for them. I also can't express enough how much I LOVE this new trend of the boutonniere card that just slips into the pocket. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend looking it up and considering it, true game changer.
Dress bustling when no one can remember how it’s done.
I have seen so many different bustles on dresses. Some a simple hook and some that have as many as 8 spots to hook up and each is a tiny white thread on a lacey white dress. Knowing how this usually works and instructing the bridesmaids who are trying but feel lost is something I always help with.
Pro Tip: TEST your bustle out before you leave alterations. Walk with it, prentend dance in it (do a twirl even) and sit down a few times. I had one bustle that left the train slightly longer, very pretty, but the bride got caught up everytime her groom spun her around on the dance floor. Another bride's bustle would unhook everytime she sat down and got up. I've also had one where when they went to put the threading over the clear buttons, the threads came right out and I had to sew them a new one. I've truly seen it all lol.
Veil fixing and fluffing for that perfect photo moment.
Knowing which direction the comb of a veil goes or even how to keep in place according to how your hair is styled, is also something I have helped many brides with. Showing a bridesmaid how to steam your dress/veil or even walking your veil to your bridal suit because you're done wearing it.
Timeline managing when the planner is tied up elsewhere.
I'm very mindful of the time, ceremony time, when guests might start arriving and how long we are causing your guests to have to wait. While I would love to shoot a couple for an endless amount of time because they look gorgeous, I'm also very aware that it's not about me and there's a bigger picture...the couple and how they get to enjoy their day with their loved ones.
Family wrangling during portraits to keep things moving.
I'm bossy and loud, when I need to be. You need me to tell guests to go away because you need a breather, I got you. You need to get them all in the same area for a picture you want, I also got you. I'm never rude, but I can be as direct as you need to keep things moving along, always with a smile on my face.
Emergency sewing or taping when there’s a wardrobe mishap.
I generally keep a little sewing kit, emergency body tape and all sorts of random items in my camera bag with me. I know how to sew and I know where to tape lol. And it wouldn't be my first time doing it.
Encouragement and calming support when emotions get overwhelming.
I'm hired by you, the couple, so I'm there for you. I have reminded many brides that things are ok. You wanted each table to have 5 vases, but they have 3, you're guests will never know the difference. The parents that are acting up or weird dynamics that are happening around you, let's clear the room and get centered. Something is delayed and we don't have time for the bridesmaids pictures before ceremony, it's ok. I can pivot and go with the natural flow of the wedding day.
It’s not unusual for me to hold a tissue out of frame for a bride during her vows or to run to the car for forgotten shoes while guests are arriving. These little moments might not make it into the photo gallery, but they absolutely shape the experience. Your experience makes a difference. There is a calm confidence that comes with having photographed so many weddings. That experience allows me to anticipate what’s coming, adapt quickly to changes, and make couples feel taken care of in a way that goes far beyond photos. I know what lighting will look like at a certain venue during different times of the day. I know how to pose couples in a way that looks natural, even when they feel awkward. I know how to read the energy in a room and shift my approach to match what is needed. When things don’t go exactly as planned, and let’s be honest, they rarely do, experience is what helps keep the day from feeling chaotic.
It’s about more than photography. Yes, you’re hiring me for my photography. But what you’re also getting is someone who is invested in your day running smoothly. I know how important this day is. I know how much time, money, and emotion has gone into it. That’s why I do everything I can to be helpful, calm, prepared, and supportive. I’m not just taking pictures. I’m there to help you feel confident, cared for, and present in the moment.
Over the years, I’ve had so many brides and grooms tell me something like,
"You were the one person who kept me calm all day."
"You knew exactly what to do when things got stressful."
"You helped me more than anyone else, and I didn’t expect that from a photographer."
I hear these things often, and they mean the world to me. Because while the photos are forever, the experience of your day matters just as much. The right photographer does more than document your wedding. We help protect your peace.
When you hire a seasoned wedding photographer, you’re not just investing in beautiful images. You’re investing in someone who will show up prepared, flexible, and fully present. You’re getting someone who has walked through rain delays, venue mix-ups, dress malfunctions, and timeline chaos and still delivered galleries full of love, joy, and calm.
So yes, I’ll be there to capture your first look, your tears during vows, your wild reception moments, and all the in-between magic. But I’ll also be there with a sewing kit, a backup plan, a gentle voice, and a whole lot of heart. Because your wedding day deserves more than just good photos. It deserves someone who truly cares about how you experience your day.
